The following is a quote from Dr Mahathir Mohamad who was Prime Minister of Malaysia, 1981-2003.
These are his thoughts on democracy:
'Too much democracy leads to homosexuality, moral decay, racial intolerance, economic decline, single-parent families and a lax work ethic.'
Ouch.........a little harsh in my opinion

Um... in what was is this guy wrong? I think he's right. :D
The United States isn't a democracy. and the founding fathers never wanted it to be. They called it "mob rule."
Therefore, the question begs to be asked: why do so many people want is to believe that we are a democracy? Hmmm.
That is certainly a fair point. The US is a democracy only to the extent that the electorate is allowed to exercise their democratic rights only once every four years. Lobby groups might be considered an extension of this democracy but even then that's a stretch. The Founding Fathers were definately wary of, and guarded against a 'tyranny of the majority'. Still I think the US does a superb job of maintaining any semblance of a representative liberal democracy in such a sprawling and diverse land.
However the quote should be thought of in the context of Malaysia. Mohamad was referring to an increase in democracy in Malaysia which is not comparable to the US. Malaysia (I believe) is simply totalitarianism disguised as liberal democracy. Since independence in 1957 the UNMO has been the dominant party in one form or another. A little more 'democracy' wouldn't go astray.
